President's Corner

The days are becoming longer, the weather is warmer, and I’m beginning to look forward to spring. Though I will miss the snow, I’m beginning to get excited about sailing again. The high levels of snowfall should help the water levels in the great lakes this summer.

Now that we are discussing looking forward, the full board met last month and completed the SHAPE planning session for the chapter. If you are currently serving on a committee your committee chair will be sharing the 2011 goals with you. If you are not currently serving on a committee it may be time to get involved. Please take a look at the goals that I have listed below. Are there any goals that you could contribute to and get the most out of your membership?

  • Improve functionality of the mentoring database by a) adding additional expertise categories; b) completing an updated survey for current and prospective mentors by December 31, 2011.
  • Reach out to our student chapters to see if there are any events the Mentoring Committee can help them with.
  • Increase SHRM Foundation contributions by 10% in 2011 for the foundation.
  • Create a Workforce Readiness tool kit to share on the website. Advertise the tool kit so the community will know about the resource.
  • Have more influence in the local high school markets.
  • Provide more support to the student chapters.
  • Inspire more members to join the Workforce Readiness Committee.
  • Increase scholarship applications for the exams to 4-5 applicants.
  • Increase the number of PHR and SPHR certified chapter members by 20% during 2010 (by January 1, 2011).
  • Work to increase the size of the UM Student chapter so membership reaches 8 people and the chapter can be approved by December 2011.
  • Continue to recognize one student chapter member at each GAASHRM Monthly  Meeting.
  • Hold one ½ day conference for strategic credit.
  • Achieve 60% strategic meetings for the year.
  • Increase disability awareness with a training event during 2010.
  • Increase membership knowledge and awareness in employment law by continuous monthly newsletter articles, quarterly 5 minute updates at the meetings and the ability to create a law page on our website where people can submit questions, etc. Example could be a Blog. “Ask Theresa” site.
  • Provide template for legislative letters for GAASHRM members.
  • Increase survey participation by at least five percent over last year’s numbers.

Do these goals meet your needs as a member? If so, get involved and help us achieve them. If not, get involved and give the board feedback of where you would like to steer the chapter in a different direction.

Having fun getting it done,
